LA Financial Federal Credit Union data breach settlement

What Is This Settlement About?

A $725,000 settlement has been reached to resolve claims arising from a data security incident involving LA Financial Federal Credit Union, d/b/a LA Financial, on or about June 10, 2024. According to the lawsuit, an unauthorized party gained access to private information held by the credit union.

The lawsuit alleged that the compromised private information may have included names, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, driver's license numbers, passport numbers, state identification numbers, account numbers, payment card numbers, routing numbers, health insurance information, taxpayer identification numbers, and biometric data, and that the credit union failed to adequately protect that data. LA Financial denies the allegations and any wrongdoing or liability, and the court has not determined that any law was violated; the parties agreed to settle to avoid the risk, cost, and time of continued litigation. The court has preliminarily approved the agreement, and class members can now file claims.

Who Qualifies?

The settlement class includes all individuals whose personal information was compromised in the June 2024 LA Financial Federal Credit Union data breach and who were sent notice of the incident.

There is also a California subclass for settlement class members who were California residents physically located in the state at any time between June 10, 2024 and August 5, 2026. California subclass members are eligible for an additional $100 cash payment on top of the other available benefits. If you received a notice letter about this breach, that letter is the clearest sign you are part of the class.

How Much Can You Get?

Class members can choose between two benefit options. The first is reimbursement of up to $5,000 for documented out-of-pocket losses and expenses fairly traceable to the breach. This can include credit reports purchased between June 10, 2024 and August 5, 2026, the cost of credit monitoring or fraud resolution services, and unreimbursed identity-theft or fraud losses. Documentation is required for this tier.

As an alternative, class members who do not submit a documented-loss claim can elect a pro rata cash payment, estimated at $50 or more, with no documentation required. The exact amount depends on how many valid claims are filed against the net settlement fund. California subclass members can receive an additional $100 cash payment on top of either option, but must provide proof of California residency through a sworn attestation; this amount may also be reduced pro rata depending on the total value of approved claims.

All class members may also submit a claim to receive two years of free credit monitoring services in addition to any cash benefit. As part of the settlement, the credit union has also agreed to implement and maintain enhanced data security measures.

How to File a Claim

The fastest way to file is online through the official settlement website. To file online, you will need the Unique ID and PIN printed on the postcard notice that was mailed to class members. If you are claiming documented losses under the up-to-$5,000 tier, you will also need to upload supporting documentation such as credit card statements, bank statements, invoices, telephone records, or receipts (self-prepared documents alone are not sufficient). You can also download a paper claim form and mail it to the settlement administrator. If you lost your notice or never received one, use the contact options on the official settlement website to request your filing information. After you submit online, you will receive a confirmation code by email.

This is also a fitting moment to review your accounts and credit. For broader background on protecting yourself after an incident like this, see our data breach settlements hub, and our coverage of the related Cross Valley Federal Credit Union data breach settlement.

Important Deadlines

The deadline to submit a claim is August 5, 2026 — online submissions and mailed claim forms must be in or postmarked by that date. The deadline to exclude yourself from (opt out of) or object to the settlement is July 6, 2026. The court will hold the final approval hearing on July 20, 2026 at 10:30 a.m. PT before the Honorable Theresa M. Traber at the Los Angeles County Superior Court in Los Angeles, when it will decide whether to grant final approval; the date may change, so check the official settlement website for updates. Settlement benefits are paid only after the settlement is approved and becomes final.

Beware of Scams

Legitimate settlement administrators do not ask you to pay a fee to receive your payment, and they do not request full Social Security numbers or bank passwords by phone or email. File only through the official settlement website, and treat unsolicited messages demanding payment or sensitive details as a warning sign.
